London’s wellness scene has never felt busier – or noisier – but tucked a few doors down from our East London Hox, Sauna & Plunge are offering something refreshingly simple: a space to slow down.
Founded on the belief that heat and cold can reset far more than the body, the duo behind the studio are building a new kind of neighbourhood ritual; one designed for real London schedules, real London stress, and real Londoners. Think 30-minute escapes, community energy, thoughtful design, and a philosophy that treats contrast therapy not as a trend, but a way to stay human in a relentless city.
We sat down with the founders to talk about ritual vs. trend, why design matters as much as temperature, and what London’s wellness culture really looks like from inside the sauna.
Firstly, we’re so happy to have you guys as neighbours. Welcome to the hood! What was the spark or philosophy that shaped Sauna & Plunge, and what did you feel the neighbourhood was missing?
Our philosophy comes from our own experience with contrast therapy. Over the years, we’ve become totally obsessed with it, not just because of the physical benefits, but mostly because of how much it helps mentally, especially when coping with the stresses of everyday life in a city like London. The city is chaotic, fast, and relentless, and we wanted to create a space where you can step away from the hustle and bustle, fully clear your mind, and focus on yourself.
Our 30 minute sessions are designed to fit seamlessly into your schedule, giving you a proper mini escape from the non stop pace of the city. People often walk in carrying the weight of work, life, and stress on their shoulders, and when they leave, we want them to feel lighter, recharged, and ready to take on whatever the day throws at them. We want to make contrast therapy accessible, affordable, and easy to fit into your lifestyle, so you don’t need to dedicate a morning, evening, or even a whole day to feeling better.
“Our 30 minute sessions are designed to fit seamlessly into your schedule, giving you a proper mini escape from the non stop pace of the city.”
Heat and cold therapy are having a cultural moment, but you treat them almost like rituals rather than trends. How do you guide guests into experiencing these practices in a more mindful, long-term way?
At Sauna & Plunge we see heat and cold therapy as far more than just the latest wellness fad, for us it’s about inviting people into something intentional, repeatable and deeply beneficial to body and mind. While there’s a growing wave of interest in saunas, ice baths and contrast therapy globally, we deliberately design our experience to feel like a ritual you return to, not a one‑off tick‑box. Here’s how we do that:
We start with education and structure.
A lot of people come to know about ice baths or saunas from social media or news articles, but often they don’t know how to use them meaningfully. Our contrast therapy classes blend breathwork, intentional pacing, heat and cold exposure in a way that emphasizes rhythm and awareness over Instagram style shock value. Whether it’s our contrast club, walk through headsets, or even speaking to the team, all our sessions are there to take someone through a purposeful cycle of activation, calm and reset, not just a random dip and sprint.
We make it easy to build a rhythm.
Rather than dumping people into hour long or 90 minute sessions that are hard to fit into everyday life, we offer 30 minute sessions and flexible memberships that slot into busy London schedules. That means people can experience heat and cold consistently, week after week, without dedicating a huge chunk of time or planning their whole day around it, turning it into a habit rather than a one time experience.
We tie it into community and recovery, not just novelty.
Our space isn’t just about hitting extremes of temperature. With breathwork, yoga, pilates, sound, a wellness cafe and social elements alongside the sauna and plunge, we frame the practice as part of a broader wellbeing journey, one that supports mental focus, stress resilience and physical recovery over the long haul.
We lean on real science & mindful intention.
We emphasise the why, not just the wow. Heat and cold exposure have well documented effects on circulation, sleep, stress reduction and nervous system balance, especially when approached regularly and mindfully rather than as a one off shock session. That helps people see contrast therapy as a practice, not a trend.
Your design choices feel as central as the therapies themselves – minimalist, tactile, almost meditative. How does the environment play into the physiological benefits of sauna and cold plunge?
Thanks for noticing! Our background in design and architecture made it really important for the space to reflect the experience we want our community to have. From the moment you step into our studio, the environment is minimalist, cosy, and welcoming, almost meditative, helping guests start to unwind before they even enter the sauna or plunge. We want everyone walking through the door to have that “Ahhhh” exhale moment and feel they are in a space where they can reset and recharge.
Every plunge, wall, and feature is 3D-printed, often using recycled materials, giving the studio a unique, tactile aesthetic while reflecting our commitment to sustainability. But this isn’t just about looks, the design actively supports the physiological benefits of contrast therapy. A calm, intentional environment helps lower stress, improve circulation, and primes the nervous system for heat and cold exposure.
What have you learned about how different types of people use the space, and what does that say about the state of wellness in London right now?
What we’ve learned as founders is that wellness in London isn’t just about fitness or hitting a certain look, it’s about creating space for people to feel better, physically and mentally. From the beginning, we wanted Sauna & Plunge to be for normal people, not just high performance athletes. We see entrepreneurs, start-up founders, high-level executives, busy professionals, weekend warriors, and everyday Londoners walking through our doors. Some come to reset after a hectic day, others to find clarity or relief from constant stress.
The London Wellness scene is booming, but it isn’t one size fits all. While social media can make it seem like you need a six-pack or an elite routine to take part, the reality is that people are looking for welcoming, accessible spaces where they can genuinely pause, recharge, and take care of themselves, physically and mentally, that’s where you find Sauna&Plunge. Our guests aren’t just chasing performance or aesthetics, they’re coming to feel better, find balance, and connect with themselves and others. Sauna & Plunge is designed for anyone who wants to improve their wellbeing, no matter your background, fitness level, or lifestyle.
For someone who’s never done hot-cold contrast therapy, what surprising shifts (physical or emotional) do you see after a few sessions? And what are the stories that stay with you?
From our own experiences, the effects of hot-cold contrast therapy can be surprisingly profound, both physically and mentally. We’ve struggled at times with anxiety, stress, and burnout, and we’re always amazed at how much clearer and calmer we feel after a session, even just 20 minutes in the sauna followed by a five minute plunge. Physically, it’s transformative too. As we all get a bit older and recovery slows, the reduced inflammation and faster recovery after workouts, whether football, running, or the gym, makes us feel young again, with less DOMS and achiness, ready to go 100% the next day, even the whoop agrees.
What really stays with us, though, are the stories from our members. We’ve heard countless accounts of how contrast therapy has helped people reset their minds and bodies, and even supported them through challenges like addiction or high stress. Whether it’s work pressures, life challenges, or the everyday strain of living in London, the space offers a proper reset. That’s the beauty of contrast therapy, it’s immediate, lasting, and for anyone who wants to feel better physically and mentally.
