Inside Peckham Carboot

Born in South London in 2019, Peckham Carboot has become a Sunday staple for secondhand lovers, bringing bargain hunters, vintage fans and the local community together. As car boots find a new following (think Depop addicts, art students and Gen Z), they’re attracting a whole new crowd in search of something a little different. Now, the team is heading east.

We caught up with co-founders Erin Murphy and Steven Lopes to talk best vintage finds, their favourite East London spots and the art of a good car boot.

How did Peckham Carboot come about?

It came about from our pure love for carbooting and a need for one in South East London. We wanted something local to us, and somewhere for us to get first dibs!!

“A good carboot is all about community and bargains, low barrier to entry whether it be to sell, or just pay your ÂŁ1 to shop.”

What makes a good carboot sale – and what gets people coming back?

Community and bargains, low barrier to entry whether it be to sell, or just pay your ÂŁ1 to shop.

What’s your best vintage market find?

Erin: Back in the day it was probably some zebra 90’s Versace trousers as they were hotttt at the time and got them for £4. Also a rare Jean Paul Gaultier Fight Racism 1 1997 jacket, for £25.

Steven: I’ve found some vintage watches that have ended up being quite collectible, particularly this 1940’s popeye pocket watch I got at a market for £20!

Who are the people, artists or designers you’re looking to for inspiration right now?

We have just been in South Korea and Japan and saw an exhibition on Naoshima, the art island. We both loved Do Ho Suh’s work – a Korean artist who uses colourful fabric to re-create rooms in different places and meticulously stitches it together and makes exact replicas of these rooms. Very cool!

Top places to shop secondhand in Shoreditch?

Attagirl on Cheshire Street – curated vintage designer womenswear – Crabi, Past Trash, 212 and 194 for menswear too.

What’s currently on your radar – a restaurant, exhibition, shop, or somewhere worth knowing about?

We want to go to the new 90’s exhibition at the Tate but haven’t been yet! Food wise, Osteria Angelina in Shoreditch is 10/10. Also, Peckham has all the best food and drinking spots – we love Taquiza and Yemanes.

Fancy finding some vintage steals of your own? Peckham Carboot, Second Life Markets & Bottle Factory Flea are heading to Hox Shoreditch on Sunday 18 October for an all-day market. Find out more & book tickets HERE.
