Every Hox has its own local illustrator, whose work pops up all over your stay, from the key card in your pocket to the bits and pieces in your room, plus our Survival Guides packed with the stuff you’ll actually want to know. Our illustrator give us a little window into their cities, and make us feel at home.

The Hoxton, Madrid
Alberto Miranda

When we asked Alberto Miranda to create the illustrations for The Hoxton, Madrid, he wanted to do something that felt genuinely true to the city rather than reaching for the usual references. The tension between Madrid's deep history and its distinctly modern energy was what interested him. The result is work rooted in everyday situations with a twist that makes you see them differently. Alberto is an illustrator and designer from Alicante who has made Madrid very much his own. He's also the Creative Director of independent Madrid beer brand Oso Brew Co, because of course he is.

Anne-Sophie Engelhardt

Anne-Sophie Engelhardt is a freelance illustrator based in Hamburg, with a knack for finding inspiration in the city’s everyday rhythm. For The Hoxton, Hamburg, she drew on its maritime character and paired it with her relaxed, energetic style to create work that feels both local and contemporary. Her illustrations are colourful and dynamic, shaped by sketchbook observations of passing people, café scenes, animals, food and the city itself. When Hamburg gets a bit much, she heads for the suburbs with her dog Timmy, then comes back with fresh eyes.

Maria Maaneskiold

Maria Maaneskiold is a Norwegian artist based in Oslo, working across illustration, painting, sculpture and performative art. For The Hoxton, Oslo, she looked to the city itself, drawing on Norwegian architecture from the 1930s to 1960s, Oslo's stone reliefs and the neon glow reflected in rain-slick streets. Her work often sits somewhere between memory and imagination, folding personal experience into something a little more dreamlike. The result feels distinctly Oslo, plus a little magic.

Luchadora
2025
Alessandra Marianelli is a graphic designer and illustrator based in Florence, who goes by the name Luchadora, inspired by the joy, imagination and colour of Mexican Ladies of Wrestling. It's a fitting alias for someone whose work is defined by excessive, round and sinuous shapes that fill space with colour and harmony. For The Hoxton, Florence, she brought that same bold, joyful energy to a city that knows a thing or two about beautiful things.

Jack Fletcher
2025
Jack Fletcher is an illustrator and designer from Edinburgh whose work is full of movement, colour and momentum. For The Hoxton, Edinburgh, creating the illustrations was personal. Having grown up running about the city, he wanted to capture the bits of the Edinburgh that make it what it is, from its deep history to its unmistakable character. Not every city has a castle planted in the middle of it on top of an extinct volcano, after all. Playful, dynamic and full of local pride, his work feels right at home here.

Conor Nolan
2025
Conor Nolan is an Irish illustrator from Blanchardstown in Dublin. Conor's work consists of a graphic depiction of a variety of characters and motifs, with interesting expressions, inky lines, and a distinct textured appearance that make for a very bold impression. Conor's work spans various areas of design and illustration, having applied his work to editorial illustration, packaging, murals, animation, and apparel, with clients including Facebook, Jameson, and The Hoxton.

Ana Popescu
2024
Ana Popescu is a visual artist and illustrator based in Vienna, whose work catches your eye and doesn't let go. Strong colours, simple shapes and a quietly mysterious use of light and shadow give everyday objects an extra dimension, a second life. Her vibrant palette and considered use of contrast sit somewhere between Pop Art, Bauhaus and modernist landscape, with occasional dotted patterns that are entirely her own. Working with pencil, felt tip pens, markers and acrylic paint, her heroes are David Hockney and Alex Katz. We couldn't think of a better person to bring The Hoxton, Vienna to life.

Kati Szilágyi

Kati Szilágyi is an award-winning freelance illustrator based in Berlin, known for work that balances strong conceptual ideas with atmospheric storytelling and her own quietly humorous touch. Her technique blends classical drawing and cutouts with digital colour, a process as layered as the work itself. For The Hoxton, Berlin, she explored the city through the eyes of a curious traveller, drawn to design, culture, food and the distinct character of each neighbourhood. The result is a playful, personal take on a city that never quite reveals itself all at once.

Sandy van Helden

Sandy van Helden is a Dutch illustrator and studio founder based in Amsterdam. Since setting up her studio in 2015, she's taken on projects locally and internationally, spanning murals, campaigns, packaging and brand activations. Her signature style, curvy lines and bright colours, is a visual language she's spent more than a decade refining. Playful but never lightweight, it translates across formats and scales. For The Hoxton, Amsterdam Lloyd, it made sense to bring in someone who knows the city from the inside out.

Baptiste Virot
2023
Baptiste Virot is a French illustrator, comic artist and designer splitting his time between Strasbourg and Brussels, with a style full of wavy lines, surreal characters and a slightly offbeat sense of humour. Working across hand-screened prints, risograph zines, comics and commercial illustration, he brings a graphic, retro-pop sensibility to everything he touches. Alongside his partner Jinhee Han, he also runs Brussels-based publishing house Animal Press. For The Hoxton, Brussels, his playful eye and love of print felt like a very good match.
The Hoxton, Barcelona
José Antonio Roda

For The Hoxton, Barcelona, Roda wanted to capture something specific about Poblenou: that particular mix of old Mediterranean character and the energy of a neighbourhood that's very much in the middle of becoming something. Playful, international and genuinely fun, the work reflects a place that hasn't forgotten where it came from.Roda has been working as a full-time freelance illustrator since 2017. The through-line in everything he does is an instinct for images that feel warm, accessible and immediately understood. Joy, basically, but with craft behind it.

Stephanie Unger

At Hox Shepherd’s Bush, Stephanie Unger’s work adds something special to the hotel. The London-based artist and illustrator is known for bold colour, peppy icons and simple shapes that give everyday scenes plenty of personality. Raised in south west London, she brings an instinctive, playful approach to everything she makes, whether it starts as a quick sketchbook doodle or a finished commission. Her illustrations turn ordinary objects and small moments into something graphic, bright and full of character.

Michele Marconi
2021
Michele Marconi is an Italian illustrator based in Rome. His style is characterized by a conceptual approach and a sharp use of color. Working on a global scale across editorial, branding, and corporate, he collaborates with clients in the US, UK, Japan, France, Norway, and Canada. He has received international recognition from institutions such as American Illustration and Communication Arts, and has exhibited his work in galleries across Rome, Paris, and Madrid. In the illustrations commissioned by The Hoxton, he amplifies the everyday life of the Coppedè and Villa Borghese neighborhoods, where he lives and works.

Clay Hickson
2019
Clay Hickson is a Los Angeles based illustrator and graphic designer who grew up amongst the redwoods, apple orchards and dairy farms of Northern California before studying printmaking at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His work has appeared in The New York Times, The New Yorker, Hermes and A24, among others. He's also the co-founder of Caboose Books, an independent publisher of limited edition artist prints and books. For The Hoxton, Los Angeles, the project became a chance to re-introduce himself to a city he'd only just moved back to.

Charlotte Croy Hudson

Charlotte Croy is an American designer, art director and 2D mixed-media artist whose work explores human connection through emotionally driven, experience-led design. Her practice moves through an abstract, dream-world pictorial realm, with each piece shaped by instinct, curiosity and whatever unexpected combination happens to click. Based in Chicago for a decade before later moving to Los Angeles, she brought plenty of herself to her work for The Hoxton, Chicago too. For Charlotte, every piece is a kind of self-portrait, rooted in feeling and made to spark one in return.

Chester Holme
2019
Chester Holme is an illustrator and artist known for a distinctive graphic style rooted in printmaking processes. Born and raised in Peckham, he now lives and works from his studio in Forest Hill, South London. Strong flat colours, simplified forms and thick lines give his work a sense of character, narrative and atmosphere, with nothing overworked or unnecessary. The result is work that feels considered, confident and full of personality, with a sharp eye for composition and storytelling.

Jing Wei
2018
Jing Wei is a multidisciplinary Chinese-American visual artist based in Brooklyn, whose practice spans editorial illustration, printmaking, large-scale public art and immersive installations. Her work is rooted in storytelling, humour and the small interactions that often go unnoticed in daily life. For The Hoxton, Williamsburg, she created a playful world of vignettes that capture what it actually feels like to be in the neighbourhood: biking down Kent Ave, an indulgent round of room service, a long walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. Familiar, specific and unmistakably Brooklyn.

Alice Mollon
2017
Alice Mollon is a French-born, London-based illustrator whose work has a way of making you look twice. For The Hoxton, Paris, she brought that same sensibility to capturing something most people get wrong about the city: that Parisian style doesn't have to mean cold. Working with a limited palette and simplified forms, a nod to the visual language of French modernist posters and mid-century graphic design, she layered in unexpected details that keep things warm, a little irreverent and genuinely joyful. The aim was to balance elegance with approachability. Less guarded, more neighbourly.

Rick Hedof
2015
Hedof is the one-man creative studio of Dutch illustrator Rick Berkelmans. Candy-coloured sceneries, suspicious-looking characters and wonky shapes are his signature, a visual world that manages to feel both immediately striking and quietly smart. His work spans magazines, products, campaigns, installations and walls across the globe, for the likes of Nike, The New York Times, Google and IKEA. For The Hoxton, Amsterdam, the city guide illustrations ended up sparking a whole new direction in his work, and Rick remains a regular at our hotels.

Toby Triumph
2014
Toby is an illustrator known for detailed hand-drawn work with an irreverent edge, bringing together characters, typography and playful turns of phrase. Using outlines and blocks to build definition, his illustrations often come to life in mono or duo-tone palettes that feel bold, graphic and full of personality. His work has appeared across packaging, clothing, installations and large-scale murals, and for The Hoxton, Holborn, that same lively, distinctive approach felt right at home.

Gwendal Le Bec
2006
Gwendal Le Bec is a French graphic artist and writer based in Paris, with a practice spanning illustration, editorial work and children’s books. In 2011, his book Le Roi des oiseaux won Best Picture Book at the Montreuil Children’s Book Fair in France. Gwendal was also our very first illustrator, Shoreditch is still his original Hox home, but these days Gwendal also holds the role of Global Illustrator for The Hoxton. So while other illustrators are tied to one neighbourhood, his work turns up across Hoxtons worldwide, and all over our website too.
The Hox Gallery
