There probably aren’t many more suited to giving an insight into the musical bones of Soho, London, than our pal Sonny Rooney. A Londoner born and bred, Sonny Rooney, aka Pinky Perzelle, is (deep breath) a DJ, producer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, and has consequently spent a LOT of time in Soho’s record stores and music shops – so who better to grill for the best local intel on the scene around The Hoxton, Holborn?
Soho, of course, is the heartbeat of the London music scene, where the echoes of legendary gigs fill the streets and vinyl hunters find their paradise. From the Rolling Stones’ first-ever gig, to Miles Davis performing at the legendary Ronnie Scott’s jazz club, this neighbourhood has been the launching pad for countless music milestones, making it an absolute treasure trove for anyone keen on tracing the vibrant lineage of British music. Below, Sonny lets us in on some great recs (just in time for Record Store Day this April 20th), sharing his love of the city and Soho’s musical cred, as well as his fave spots for trawling vinyl, hello… Phonica, Rough Trade and Sound Of The Universe.
