A Vintage Obsessive Shares Her Favourite Pre-Loved Gems In Central London

Coco Chanel once said that before leaving the house you should look in the mirror and take one thing off. For the bulk of my adult life, I’ve largely ignored this advice. Subscribing, instead, to the Annie Hall art of getting dressed: layers, a lot of men’s ties and never far from a pair of softly tinted glasses that are practically useless besides making you feel briefly like a sexy librarian from the seventies. I’d wager at least 85% of my wardrobe is vintage. From oversized $5 blazers thrifted in Brooklyn; an early 00s tiered black and pink slip dress, altered days before for my brother’s wedding; a men’s dark navy double-breasted suit bought on a whim in a hungover daze because I thought it made me look a bit like a Jarvis Cocker at the time (it is now my most worn and most treasured uniform).
There’s something personal, more romantic, about clothes that have lived a past life. Some of my earliest childhood memories are trawling around car boot and antique fairs with my mother at the weekend (long before understanding the merits of conscious consumption), though it wasn’t until my late teens my obsession with pre-loved goods really peaked. Vintage shops were just so much more fun than any other. A dress up box for grown-ups, with eccentric characters behind the counter who really cared about style. For many years working as a magazine fashion editor, it was also one of the few places I could procure cool one-off pieces that wouldn’t cause financial ruin. Whenever landing in a new city, I first ritualistically search on Google Maps a second-hand store to hang out in. And yet London, still, for me remains unparalleled when it comes to the very best vintage treasure hunts — whether you’re looking for a show-off gown or an everyday wear-with-everything blazer, here are some of my go-to destinations in Central London to bookmark for your next weekend mooch.
Retromania
On our third date, my boyfriend (who quickly noted my penchant for other people’s old things) took me to this store. It was love at first sight. Hidden on a sleepy street, though just five minutes from Victoria station, it is a vintage mecca. Divinely curated, with something for everyone: £3 Italian neckties, peacocking 80s cocktail dresses, Oleg Cassini power blazers, Penny Lane-style winter coats, delicate bridalwear from the 1950s, genuine military coats, Miu Miu ankle boots. I pay a visit at least once a week. P.S. Thursday afternoons are the best time to go, as that’s usually when they get new stock in.

Annie’s Ibiza
Have some (OK, a lot) of cash to blow? In the market for a statement piece for a wedding or birthday party? Annie’s Ibiza, just off Carnaby Street and close to Liberty, is the GOAT in this category, with Kate Moss, Dakota Johnson, and Margot Robbie loyal fans. Amongst the rails of eclectic partywear from emerging brands such as Connor Ives and Dilara Findikoglu you’ll discover the rarest one-of-a-kind pieces in owner Annie Doble’s archive collection: think 1920s gold lame lace dresses next to blushing silk rompers and micro mini-dresses made from antique Egyptian fabrics.

Gong Nong Bing Vintage
If you’re spending an afternoon wandering around Soho, check out this cute and fairly new Aladdin’s cave of curated vintage. The two female founders tend to source a lot of 1960s and ‘70s clothing from Eastern Europe, eclectic shirting and outerwear and a mountainous collection of fun costume jewellery (all earrings and necklaces are priced at £18). You must check out the basement downstairs, too – most people tend to miss it, but it’s full of fabulous coats that simply take up too much space upstairs.

GOOD
Sometimes vintage stores can be a bit overwhelming – too much choice to sift through. For a well-curated, but arguably smaller selection, GOOD in Covent Garden is totally charming (and handily less than 10 minutes’ walk from The Hoxton, Holborn). In more recent times, I’ve found a black Emporio Armani suit, reminiscent of YSL’s Le Smoking, which the kind staff knocked off £40 from the original price in order to accommodate taking the trouser length up (at 5 ft 2 this is not uncommon). Plus, a funky Paul Smith tie for my dad’s birthday (most of their ties are hidden in a box behind the counter to avoid cluttering the displays).

Beyond Retro
If you ever find yourself near Oxford Circus underground with half an hour to kill, I urge you to have a little rummage around Beyond Retro’s new Soho dwellings on Argyll Street. I say rummage, because while you may have to sift through a bit of 2010’s tat, there is no shortage of (reasonably priced) gems to be found amongst the heaps, from cute nighties to hard-wearing leather jackets that will go with pretty much anything.
