Sound on with Jarki Monno + Marshall

Jarki Monno

When London-based musician Jarki Monno checks into The Hoxton, Shoreditch, you know good things are about to happen. For the first instalment of a three-part series with record label Marshall — celebrating their headphones being stocked in the Hox Shop in Shoreditch, New York and LA — we invited Monno to stay with us and talk sound, creativity and community: three things he embodies in his work. We also chatted about life in London, the gigs that inspire him, the hidden gems he loves most, and how he keeps a sense of home while travelling for his music. Along the way, he shared how Marshall continues to shape his creative process, and how his time at The Hoxton gave him the perfect space to recharge between projects.

Tell us a little about yourself

I’m an artist/singer songwriter from North-West London. I describe my music as indie-pop, taking inspiration from all walks of life – I use music as a release for life events that most people experience as vert cathartic. I like to think my music speaks for those that don’t find it easy to talk about how they feel, and that it can help them communicate without having to bare themselves! After being in the industry for close to eight years, I feel like I’ve really found my sound and solidified the direction of where I’m going, especially after signing for Marshall Records in 2022.

What do you love most about living in London?

The mind of a musician can be very fast paced a lot of the time, whether it be writing on the move or planning for the future, and I feel London life is very similar to that. There’s something beautiful about the chaos of the city at times, passing strangers in the street that are living their own story. At the same time, you can turn one corner and find little pockets of peace that can extract you from the busy-ness of it all. You can find influence in it all and pick it all apart.

What’s the best gig you’ve been to in London?

I’ve been to many gigs throughout the years in London, from my first – Take That at Wembley Stadium (don’t knock it until you see them) – to inspirations of mine like Zach Said at Servant Jazz Quarters in Dalston. There’s always been one stand out for me though, which was Sam Fender at O2 Shepherds Bush. Something was different in the room that evening; the energy was something I had never experienced before. Everyone let loose. I’d say that was an evening that made me know I wanted to push my career as far as possible. Especially now to see him headlining major festivals and selling out arenas around the world. To have seen him right at the start of his career was truly inspirational.

How does the city influence your creativity or daily life?

I’m not one that is able to sit still for too long, I like to keep busy in some way or another and keep on the move, London is class for this. When I sit down specifically to write, I seem to come to a halt. There’s something about trying to force the music that has never sat with me. As mentioned earlier – with so many different story lines in each individual across north to south London – I find my mind writing without thinking about it. Also, because there is so much going on around you, it can be a great distraction for anything you’re going through yourself. Everyone has their own struggles we battle with day-to-day so to be able to let go, just for an hour, goes a long way.

What’s one hidden gem or local spot you think everyone should know about?

I’m a sucker for a pub/bar, and there are far too many to list off.  But one place I have NEVER had a bad time is Boogaloo in Highgate… when the lights go down and the DJ starts to rattle off some old school classics, that is me in my element!

Tell us a bit about your stay at The Hoxton

I’ve walked past the Hoxton in Shoreditch many times over the years and heard through friends how great of a stay it is, and they were not wrong. As soon as I arrived the staff were so welcoming and made me feel at home. The room was exactly what I needed, plus the Marshall speaker I picked up from the Hox Shop enabled me to soundtrack my evening, getting ready to head into the city. The speaker is always easy to use and super full-sounding. A standout factor had to be the Llama Inn restaurant on the top floor of the building, the food… my word, I can’t even begin to describe how flavoursome it was. I didn’t want it to end!

How do you make sure you feel at home when travelling for work?

I like to call close friends or family at the end of the day when winding down and let them know what the day consisted of.  Whether it be sending them a song from a songwriting session made in the studio, or sending snippets of a music video shoot! As creatives, I feel we don’t tend to reflect on things as much as we should. We bare ourselves to the world which can be extremely daunting at times, so in the early stages it’s good to get a grasp of how our work will be received by others!

What’s next for you?

I’m extremely excited for my London headline show on Friday, 14th November 2025 at The Lower Third, right by Tottenham Court Road! It will be my biggest headline show to date and round off an already cracking year. I’ll be playing my most recent EP ‘Not What It Looks Like’ in full, as well as the majority of the rest of my discography! Other than that I’m just busy back in the studio working on new music for the future, and boy I can’t wait!
