Meet the Artist: Ben Hickman

In Shoreditch, you’ll find a new series by photographer and long-time collaborator Ben Hickman, created to mark the 20th anniversary of the original Hox in East London. A celebration of the neighbourhood and the people who shape it, Warm Observations captures everyday Shoreditch through dreamlike, sun-washed scenes, shot on film and hand-printed in the darkroom to create Ben’s signature cinematic style.

We caught up with Ben to chat about what inspires him, how he gets out of a creative rut, and his go-to neighbourhood spots.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone looking to pursue their passion full time?

Stay in the forcefield. It’s something I heard Daniel Arsham say once, and it really resonated with me as an aspiring artist. When you create things, it’s natural to have moments of doubt and discouragement. You’ve just got to stick with it, ride the lows, and give it time. Most people back off when they feel the resistance, and exit the forcefield. But if you stay patient and keep creating, the little victories will compound. Give it time basically. Eventually, you have enough self-proof and encouragement to take that leap. You’ve built your skill to a level that’s undeniable to others, and you start to believe in it too. Then it feels like you can really start.

What are your top 3 albums that you feel have had the most impact on you / changed the way you think?

Top three is impossible, but I’ll name three come to mind. Nostalgia, ULTRA (Frank Ocean) – best mixtape of all time. Life’s a Bitch, I Just Need an Early Night (Nix Northwest). WELCOME HOME (Aries).

Where do you go to switch off or find creativity if you’re stuck in a rut?

Outside, somewhere in the sun preferably. Situations can sometimes make this difficult, but there are really inspiring scenes/moments happening in the everyday. To me, getting creative again is just about making an effort to see things in a more beautiful way. I honestly believe it’s all there, you just have to be intentional about wanting to see it. In this way, switching off and finding creativity are actually one and the same to me. I just enter this state of receiving what the world is offering up, which is very cathartic. Then I also get to be creative again by documenting the moments that resonate.

You’re constantly shooting when you travel – which country have you found most inspiration in?

I think my style lends itself very well to Italy. Every time I visit the weather’s amazing, coupled with amazing food, culture, and those little wholesome moments that peak your interest. Japan was also really cool – everything felt new and interesting, and the aesthetics are off the charts. I guess anywhere in the world that’s new will intrigue you, but these are the two that sprung to mind.

Finally, what your Shoreditch hit-list?
  • Coffee Shop – Origin. Or Pomme Bakery for pastries.
  • Favourite gallery – Not in Shoreditch, but The Photographers’ Gallery of course.
  • Best place for a pint – Bricklayers Arms obviously, or The Knave of Clubs.
  • Best store – Goodhood.
  • Best restaurant – Campania, very quaint.

Ben’s Hox Gallery is live at The Hoxton, Shoreditch throughout 2026. Go take a peek.
