Our Florence Hotel Neighbourhood

A city deeply connected to art, architecture and, of course, food (who doesn’t love a Fiorentina steak and glass of Sangiovese wine?), it’s easy to fall for Florence’s headline acts. The marble façade of the Santa Maria del Fiore cathedral, say, or the ochre-tinted Ponte Vecchio at sunset. But it’s the experience of Firenze day-by-day that truly captures the heart. S.Forno is part of Il Santo Bevitore, a foodie trio in the hip Oltrarno district that includes a gourmet restaurant, an aperitif joint and this charming corner bakery. Stock up on homemade pastries and typical schiacciata – similar to a focaccia – filled with finocchiona (a local salami). Or shop for Italian deli treats such as olive oil, balsamic vinegar and homemade granola. At lunchtime, there’s a daily menu that ranges from seasonal salads to quiches, sandwiches and, if you’re lucky, a bowlful of the classic Tuscan Pappa al Pomodoro. Check it out

Vivoli Gelateria

Home to an affogato that went viral on social media, Vivoli is a small, centrally located shop with major aesthetic appeal. This family-run business has been serving dairy delights to the people of Florence since the 1930s. Fast-forward to today, and its ice-cream soaked in Italian espresso is the stuff of legend – more than worth the time you’ll spend queuing. Elisabetta is an interior designer who recently opened a little shop to showcase some of her favourite travel finds. A true cabinet of curiosities awaits in what she describes as ‘un bel fritto misto’ – meaning ‘a great mix’ of things.
