Our story

Just like our doors, our minds are open too. Since we opened our first hotel in Shoreditch, London in 2006, we’ve never just been about offering a bed for the night. We want to be more than that, providing a place where guests can hang out alongside the locals and submerse themselves in the neighborhood with vibrant, welcoming public spaces. Then there's our eclectic program of monthly events where we bring the outside in, working with local creatives to curate events unique to each location.

We proved that style didn’t need to be sacrificed for value and honest pricing is still very much at the heart of everything we do. We opened our second London hotel in 2014, followed by Amsterdam in 2015, Paris in 2017 and Williamsburg, Portland, Los Angeles, and Chicago all coming soon. Each hotel has its own character; however, you’ll find the familiar Hoxton Hustle, incorporating the uniqueness of their neighborhoods using local designers, artists, and illustrators for everything from interiors to wallpaper, art and neighborhood guides.

The Hoxton, Downtown LA is in a neighborhood that has seen a major revival over the last few years, with some of the city’s best restaurants, shops and bars opening up there and many more in the pipeline. Set in the 10-story Los Angeles Railway building, which was built in 1925, the building has an interesting and varied history, having been the headquarters of the L.A. Railway Authority and later housing a garment manufacturer, a candy shop, a restaurant, and a grocery store - it’s even had film sets, radio towers and electric signs erected on its rooftop.

The Hoxton, Los Angeles will offer 174 rooms designed by Ennismore Design Studio, a ground floor restaurant and basement bar operated by a local chef, along with The Hoxton’s first rooftop pool with restaurant and amazing views over Broadway, the historic theatre and cinema district and one of the oldest streets in the city.

We don’t go for strict job descriptions; however, here’s an idea of how we see the role…

You’ll report to the Director of Restaurants & Bars for The Hoxton, Los Angeles, and will have a close working relationship with the property’s Hotel Manager.

You’ll be responsible for setting up The Hoxton, Los Angeles restaurant operations. This will initially involve helping to develop the systems that ensure a successful opening of the restaurant and bar spaces at The Hoxton, Los Angeles, and managing the day to day kitchen related activities for the hotel.

Overview – Pre Opening Phase:

- Set up the operation of the kitchen to maximize profitability, minimize legal liability, and conform to food safety regulations

- Directly work with vendors to secure best pricing possible and put together a tip top food vendor list

- Work with our culinary partners to develop recipes, prepare tastings, and design menus for all outlets

- Recruit and hire a top-notch heart of house team to guide operations through the hotel and restaurant openings

- Set up systems that ensure a successful initial inspection by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health

- Work with the Vice President of Restaurants & Bars – North America, Director of Restaurant & Bars Los Angeles, and our culinary partners to set appropriate pricing levels with respect to both food cost and the competitive set

- Set up recipe books, item order lists, prep lists, and inventory systems

- Properly and adequately train team while focusing on maintaining a high team morale in keeping with The Hoxton culture

Overview - Post Opening Functions:

- Create, execute, and produce top-notch food with a constant eye on the highest quality standards, presentation, and flavor, with an eye on industry trends and neighborhood demands

- Supervise operations of kitchens to maximize profitability, minimize legal liability, and conform to alcoholic beverage regulations

- Ensure budget goals are achieved with industry leading metrics, with a specific focus on food and labor costs

- On board and create training programs for new team members

- You’ll take ownership of the restaurant operations and make decisions based on the good of the guest, the company and the people that are part of it

- Ensure statutory compliance in all food and drink related areas

- You will keep well-organized store rooms and inventories that allow for smooth running kitchens

- Oversee any kitchen related issues relating to kitchen team and facilities maintenance

- Continuously monitor and gauge the morale of the team, find creative ways to encourage staff retention, and through example, instill a passion to learn and grow

- Train, Coach, Develop, and repeat. Consistently build a pipeline of people in which growth is encouraged and we strive to promote from within

- Investigate and resolve any food-related concerns, including foodborne illness and foreign object complaints

- Consistently evaluate sales trends to revise and update menus. Make updates based on seasons, industry trends, and cost savings

- Hold team accountable for proper set up and breakdown procedures

- Oversee a maintenance program that protects and extends the life of our equipment

- Build and sustain relationships with vendors and distributors

About you

- You will be an experienced chef, with leadership experience possibly from the individual restaurant field or from an innovative hotel environment

- Have experience of restaurant openings

- You’ll live and breathe food and drink, knowing what’s hot, what’s not and who’s who

- You’ll be a stickler for quality

- You make people feel good - your team, guests and colleagues alike

- Methodical and process-driven approach to tasks, but also able to work flexibly and calmly in order to meet deadlines

- You love the creativity of food and drink, and enjoy finding new ways to innovate
