Hox How To Know The Difference – Appropriation vs. Appreciation in Fashion
The fashion industry has long been accused of having a ‘beg, borrow and steal’ approach to culture-sampling. From Chanel’s four-figure boomerang, through to the feathered headdresses at Coachella, white models wearing dreadlocks at Marc Jacobs and editorial shoots shot on council estates. When does appreciation become appropriation? When it’s done for profit? When sources aren’t credited, let alone compensated? Or is freedom to sample and remix what drives creativity?
For our latest Hox How To, we are delighted to welcome Dr Royce Mahawatte, Senior Lecturer Cultural Studies at Central Saint Martins, who will be giving an interactive talk on the history of cultural appropriation within fashion.
We then open up the debate to a panel of industry experts, with the talk moderated by Katie Rawle from the British Fashion Council. Our speakers include Dr Mahawatte alongside Kenya Hunt, Deputy Editor of ELLE; Tamara Cincik, fashion editor, brand consultant, CEO and founder of Fashion Roundtable & secretariat of the All Party Parlimentary Group for Textiles and Fashion and Leyla Reynolds, co-founder and art director of Gal-Dem.
Double Trouble Gang will also be hosting a pop-up shop from 6:30pm showcasing a custom-created range of embroided clothing exclusively for the evening, alongside their main range.
