Vanguard or vandals?

When the world is your canvas, for what do you use it? After gaining popularity in the 80s, street art started breaking all of the rules (or just not having any) with political statements in every public space. The artists, who started out as rebels, are now well-known and widely followed – you know, there’s that guy Banksy people talk about sometimes. Works are even being shown in art museums and galleries all over the world – BUT is it vandalism or art?

The Vrije Academie is all about accessible education in the culture and art sectors, so they’ve brought in Art Historian Krzysztof Dobrowolski-Onclin to answer just that question, illustrating the changes within street art – from rebellion to a whole new thing of it’s own.
