Our story

Just like our doors, our minds are open too. Since we opened our first hotel in Shoreditch, London in 2006, we’ve never just been about offering a bed for the night. We want to be more than that, providing a place where guests can hang out alongside the locals and submerse themselves in the neighborhood with vibrant, welcoming public spaces. Then there's our eclectic program of monthly events where we bring the outside in, working with local creatives to curate events unique to each location.

We proved that style didn’t need to be sacrificed for value and honest pricing is still very much at the heart of everything we do. We opened our second London hotel in 2014, followed by Amsterdam in 2015, Paris in 2017, Williamsburg and Portland in 2018, and Chicago and Los Angeles in 2019. Each hotel has its own character; however you’ll find the familiar Hoxton Hustle, incorporating the uniqueness of their neighborhoods using local designers, artists, and illustrators for everything from interiors to wallpaper, art and neighborhood guides.

The Hoxton, Portland is situated in an iconic building with an incredible history dating back to 1906. Located in Portland’s Old Town Chinatown, The Hoxton, Portland has vibrant, welcoming public spaces providing a place where guests can hangout alongside the locals and submerse themselves in the neighborhood, 113 bedrooms, a rooftop restaurant and basement bar.


The details

The role will is based out of The Hoxton, Portland.  You’ll report directly to the People Director for North America and the Hotel Manager at The Hoxton, Portland.

You’ll be responsible for the daily People function of The Hoxton, Portland. This role will oversee the recruitment, onboarding, training, engagement, employee relations and retention strategies for the hotel and will partner with the North American People team to bring programs to the property.

  • Execute the People Department’s long-term people plan and play a role in its design
  • Help position The Hoxton as an employer of choice
  • Maintain a close relationship with each individual member of the team to maintain a consistently high level of engagement and positivity
  • Champion The Hoxton’s values and behaviors to ensure they permeate all areas of the business
  • Work with managers to resolve any team issues and concerns promptly
  • Oversee the administration of the People department, including recruitment & onboarding, benefits communication and management, training, and recognition programs
  • Ensure the managers of each department maintain compliance with applicable laws and practices
  • Exercise strong judgment in evaluating situations and recommending solutions relating to our team
  • Partner with the Finance team to ensure accurate and timely processing of all information regarding pay & benefits
  • Use feedback from team surveys, mystery shoppers and your own observations of the team to create, coordinate and lead training initiatives.
  • Develop along with the North American People team a program of ongoing team events

About you 

  • You have at least two years’ experience in a People role, preferably in a hotel or restaurant group
  • You execute. You get things done
  • You are scarily organized
  • You have a keen eye for detail and love to share your notes and feedback
  • You know how to crack the whip – but make people feel good at the same time
  • You’re a great communicator – both verbally and written – and a great listener
  • You know the ins and outs of local, state and federal labor laws
  • You have experience with payroll & benefits
  • You love people and want to scout, hire and train the best team out there for the Hox
  • You can keep a secret. You exercise discretion when handling team issues
  • You jump out of bed every morning, fizzing with energy and jazzed about what you’re doing today
  • You are humble. There are no egos, and no drama
  • Ability to take ownership of issues, solve problems and make effective decisions
  • Ability to learn quickly and adapt to The Hoxton’s unique culture
  • If we get stuck in a lift with you – we’ll get along nicely and have a laugh along the way
